given day you’ll find knitters touching the yarns and admiring the knitting samples while sharing their delight in their most recent projects and seeking advice from shop owner, Wendy Ellis.
Wendy is the creative force at the center of it all. With a degree in textiles and a background in traditional crafts and handwork along with experience as a
professional hand-fitter in a couture studio mixed with some non-profit craft retail work, Wendy can interact with novice knitters to experienced professionals about anything knitting. “I especially love tourism,” she admits, “because I can talk with knitters from around the world and hear about their knitting backgrounds and techniques. That plays into my fascination with textile design anthropology.”
Wendy features luxury yarns made of fine fibers and quality dyes. One of her newest
lines is Plain Yarn. “It’s a treat to have local, organic-raised wool. Fiber production in Lancaster County is not big – the land is too valuable for fiber animals,” Wendy explains. The farm that produces the Plain Yarn is a small farm just down the street from the shop. “They have 13 sheep. We know each one by name!” The yarn colors in the line are the actual names of the sheep.
Another huge line for the shop is the Kettle Dyed yarns, which Wendy and her husband dye, themselves, in small batches. They offer
tonal and monochromatic dyed yarns as well as hand paints – self-striping yarns in vivid colors.
Wendy is happy to share her love of knitting and expert
knowledge. She offers weekly classes for all skill levels (Check the course schedule here), teaching the correct techniques and skills while emphasizing the art and joy of the process.
She hosts book signings, special events, and a Knit Night every Thursday evening in her shop for knitters to gather,
converse and, of course, to knit. You’ll also find patterns from local designers, including many of Wendy’s own creations from knitting designs to locally-sourced Yarn Jars.
At Lancaster Yarn Shop be prepared for a feast like no other. You’ll be hungry for more.
